A straightforward checklist for understanding permitted use before adding digital artwork to a project.
The licence is part of the artwork
A digital file can be copied perfectly, but the right to use it still has boundaries. Before purchasing, check whether the licence covers personal display, client work, advertising, printed products or resale.

Personal and commercial use are different
Personal use usually covers private projects and non-commercial sharing. Commercial use may allow the image to support a business, campaign or product, but it does not automatically transfer copyright or permit reselling the original file.
Keep a simple usage record
Save the invoice, licence text and download information with the project files. This small habit makes future handoffs and campaign renewals much easier.
Practical checklist
- Where will the artwork appear?
- Will it be used for a client or business?
- Is the image part of a product sold to customers?
- Are edits and crops permitted?
- Is attribution required?
- Does the licence prohibit redistribution of the source file?
Use these principles as a starting point, then adapt them to the audience, channel and creative goal of your project. The best results come from a clear intention and a willingness to iterate.
