How to Write Better Prompts for AI Image Generation

Abstract artwork from the Render vibe collection

A practical framework for turning a rough idea into a clear, visual prompt that produces more consistent results.

Start with the visual decision

A strong image prompt is not a list of impressive words. It is a compact creative brief. Begin by deciding what the image must communicate: a mood, a product benefit, a story moment or a world the viewer wants to enter.

Build the prompt in layers

Describe the subject first, then the environment, composition, lighting, colour direction and rendering style. Concrete relationships are more useful than vague adjectives. “A lone research station beneath a wide violet sky” gives the model a scene to organise; “beautiful futuristic landscape” leaves too many decisions open.

Refine one variable at a time

When a result is close, avoid rewriting everything. Change the camera angle, palette or level of detail while keeping the core scene stable. This makes each new generation an informed iteration instead of a fresh gamble.

Practical checklist

  • Subject and action: what is happening?
  • Setting and scale: where are we?
  • Composition: close-up, aerial, symmetrical or cinematic wide shot?
  • Light and colour: soft dawn, neon contrast, monochrome or warm studio light?
  • Output purpose: poster, website hero, social post or print?

Use these principles as a starting point, then adapt them to the audience, channel and creative goal of your project. The best results come from a clear intention and a willingness to iterate.
